Qatar Airways is set to resume flights between Doha and Skopje in 2025 after a five-year hiatus, according to the Macedonian Minister for Transport, Aleksandar Nikoloski. The Minister noted the airline plans to introduce “at least one new route” to Skopje, suggesting the service may include a stopover in another city or position Skopje as a transit point to a different European destination. In the past, Qatar Airways operated several routes in the region with similar stopover arrangements. For instance, flights to Zagreb were initially routed via Budapest, services to Belgrade operated through Ankara and later Sofia, while Bucharest flights also made stops in the Bulgarian capital. Over time, all these routes were upgraded to nonstop services.
Qatar Airways launched operations to Skopje in 2017. It discontinued flights to the Macedonian capital in March 2020 at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic. At the time, the airline maintained three weekly rotations between the two cities with its Airbus A320 aircraft. During its final full year of operations in 2019, it handled 29.856 passengers on the Skopje route, registering an average cabin load factor of 55.9%. The majority of Qatar Airways’ Skopje passengers were transfers. They primarily originated or were destined for the Australian market - 33%, followed by India 7%, Thailand 5% and Singapore 4%. The Macedonian government has an ongoing tender, offering subsidies to airlines in return for the launch of new routes to the country. In the previous round, Flydubai was one of the carriers to have applied for the launch of services between Dubai and Skopje in 2025, however, it is yet to schedule flights.
Qatar Airways recently made noticeable cuts across its network for the upcoming 2025 summer season. These reductions have not been avoided by the region either. The carrier is reducing its operations between Doha and Zagreb from ten weekly to daily with the start of the 2025 summer season in late March. Qatar Airways will maintain daily operations between Doha and Belgrade for most of next summer, matching 2024 levels, however, the airline will reduce flights to five weekly in May and October. This coincides with Qatar Airways’ wider network reductions in Europe specifically during those two months which will also impact Vienna, Rome, Athens, Warsaw and Zurich. The Qatari flag carrier’s seasonal summer service between Doha and Sarajevo will also be reduced on select months. The service will resume on June 1 and will be maintained five times per week, matching frequencies served in 2024. However, in August, the airline will reduce operations from last year’s seven weekly to five weekly. Furthermore, its flight program to Sarajevo will conclude on September 14, two weeks ahead of 2024
DOH-SKP-LJU would be great!
ReplyDeleteProbably this will be the case
DeleteThat would be great and considering they held talks with Slovenian government a few times last year, could make sense.
DeletePlus they are decreasing Zagreb from 14 to 10 so maybe 4 weekly DOH-SKP-LJU.
DeleteWould they be allowed to sell tickets lju-skp
DeleteYes because they have open skies with both countries.
DeleteThey used to sell tickets BUD-ZAG-BUD and SOF-BEG-SOF. They could not sell ESB-BEG-ESB which is why they moved it to Sofia.
DeleteSith wizzair having great results on skp-lju they would probably have 100% lf on that part
DeleteConsidering their LF in 2019 and the Ministers comment about "at least one route" I am inclined to also think they will tie up Skopje with another destination. I don't see any existing destination they could do it with so it would likely be one more additional route. Ljubljana makes the most sense but like someone mentioned Tirana is also a possibility.
DeleteSo would it be DOH-SKP-LJU-DOH, or DOH-SKP-LJU-SKP-DOH?
DeleteBased on previous one stop operations it would be DOH-SKP-LJU-SKP-DOH.
DeleteFor Ljubljana travelers, does it make any diference compared o traveling with the likes of Turkish with the stop at IST?
DeleteYes, because they don't need to get off the plane in SKP and wait for another flight
DeleteThey wont get off the plane in SKP, only the passengers that are leaving in SKP will get off i.e those who purchased ticket LJU-SKP, and after that those who purchashed a ticket SKP-DOH will enter the plane. Ethiopian Airlines has many flights with some stop in Europe and its done like this.
DeleteGood morning news , happy to see this , SKP is getting new routes and airlines!!!!
ReplyDeleteYes! DOH-SKP-JFK coming!
DeleteAmazing news for SKP everyday🇲🇰🥳🥳
DeleteI wonder which destination would be used as a stop or onward destination.
ReplyDeleteHaving a feeling it will be some Turkish destination on the way to SKP. We will see.
DeleteI think some european unserved route ..
Delete^ Me too. I guess we will find out soon.
DeleteGreat news.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, don't trust a thing this minister says.
ReplyDeleteThe most realistic comment.
DeleteIt is true, they had talks with Qatar airways couple days ago , and they showe potential interest , plus they will get subsidies so why not to believe ?
DeleteI am taking this with a grain of salt.
DeleteMy disclaimer: no political affiliations or preferences, but in my eyes this minister is a notorious liar.
It is one thing to overpromise or the like, but on couple ocasions he made statements that were mere lies.
@09.03 +1
Deleteminister claimed: more than 10 routes after the tender => NADA
Deleteminister claimed in December: 4-6 routes to SKP and OHD until the end of 2024=> NADA

DeleteGreat news , I hope it will be non stop route! Even stop over is still ok for , at least we have progress and getting more airlines and routes!

DeletePossibly they can connect Doha with some European unserved Skopne destination!
ReplyDeleteIf Skopje is used as a stop to somewhere I think it will definitely be something close by. Maybe Tirana?
DeleteHow long would SKP-TIA flight take?
DeleteCould be Athens or Belgrade or Sofia ....
Delete@09:23 25-30 minutes but i am not sure that anyone would buy a ticket for this route since its Qatar Airways and flights will be expensive and its 50-70 euros round trip with car, even chaper with bus.
DeleteExcellent. But any idea when the flights might start?
ReplyDeleteI'm still waiting for Flydubai.
DeleteIt would make most sense if it starts next winter season when high season begins in Dubai.
DeleteThe load factor they had was pretty bad
ReplyDeleteEspecially if you take into account that they have close to 90% LF on BEG and ZAG flights with more frequencies.
DeleteThat's why it only operated 3 weekly.
DeleteAnd why they haven't restored the flights since.
DeleteTrue
DeleteAnd don't forget, Flydubai also had flights to Skopje at the same time
DeleteSeems like this new never ending subsidy tender is having positive impact.
ReplyDeleteThe good thing is it is no longer limited to European destinations.
DeleteThis tenders are way better then the all previous ones
DeleteOther than DXB and DOH, which other non European routes could work from Skopje?
DeletePrague, Munich, and 2x Madrid/Lisbon
DeleteI meant non European routes :)
DeleteI think Tel Aviv would be a fantastic route. Israeli tourist would love Skopje and Ohrid as well. There is a big opportunity there. Plus you would get some pilgrims from Macedonian side to Jerusalem. Hopefully El Al will consider it through Sun d'Or.
DeleteDidn't Arkia fly to Ohrid at one point?
DeleteMaybe Abu Dhabi ? :)
DeleteI think Abu Dhabi along with Dubai and Doha would be a bit too much.
DeleteLets wait and see :))
DeleteIt’s great to see Qatar Airways returning to Skopje! Their services have always been top-notch, and this will surely boost connectivity for Macedonian travelers, especially for those heading to Australia and Southeast Asia. Fingers crossed for a nonstop service in the future.
ReplyDeleteKeeps fingers crossed!
DeleteServices top notch ? Have you flown with them recently? i flown with them 2 weeks ago, they are so bad...was thinking Turkish is bad but now i change my mind. They maybe were top notch before. Im talking about economy flight. Business or First class they maybe are top notch but i dont have 5k eur to waste on a single flight im sorry.
DeleteTreshnja with same post on every topic...
DeleteQatar Airways coming back is a big win for Skopje, especially if they’re considering new routes. The government’s subsidy program seems to be working. Now, let’s hope Flydubai follows through too
ReplyDeleteDOH-SKG-SKP.
ReplyDeleteHow long would SKG-SKP be? 15 minutes?
DeleteDoesnt make any sense it is so close , realistic scenario is BEG or ATH ...
DeleteATH market is big and different and QR sending A350, B777s there I don't think this is realistic for SKP.
DeleteI used to take Qatar Airways from Skopje to Australia, and the service was fantastic. Glad to hear it’s coming back! Hopefully, it will include competitive fares for long haul destinations.
ReplyDeleteThe transfer times in Doha were super convenient, and Qatar Airways’ service was top-notch.
DeleteWondering how this would compare to Turkish Airlines flights now, as the also started direct flights to Australia
DeleteTo be honest, although I don't have a big sympathy for this minister, at least in the aviation he wants to compete, and not once he mentioned how SKP was way ahead of some airports in the region few years ago, and he wants to restore the same position, not sure what is happening in the background, but at least in public he is very focused on developing the airports

DeleteSKP was way ahead of which airports ??? Pristina, Sofia, Thessaloniki, Tirana, Belgrade, Zagreb??? None of them!
"but at least in public he is very focused on developing the airports" => thats what you called empty populism
Can't wait to see them back in SKP!
ReplyDeleteThis is fantastic news for Skopje! Qatar Airways brings a level of prestige and quality that the airport needs. I hope they stick around this time and expand the service to daily flights.
ReplyDeleteI wonder which city the stopover will be in if they don’t go direct.
ReplyDeleteIt is more likely that Skopje will be the stopover to somewhere.
DeleteWith TK flying to Australia now, it will be much more difficult for them to compete.
ReplyDeleteTK flies only to Melbourne and Sydney and both have a stop, one in Kuala Lumpur the other in Singapore. QR flies nonstop to its Australia destinations, QR flies to Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. Qatar Airways has just acquired a stake in Virgin Australia so it can introduce second daily Sydney, third daily Melbourne and second daily Brisbane flights from June. Basically Virgin Australia will officially operate the new frequnecies to Doha using Qatar aircraft and crew.
DeleteTK Will, I believe, also fly to Perth non stop.
DeleteIf Qatar Airways is cutting back frequencies in major cities like Vienna and Rome, why add Skopje?
ReplyDeleteThey are coming back from only one reason , to steal the Australia bound passengers from TK. They have 35 flights allowed to operate to Australia from a October 2025.
DeleteSyd ,Mel and Per will go non stop from IST, while Bne, Adl might be connected through Asia.
I would not like to see SKP tagged with another city , but if they have to do it , I prefer to be ATH.
No chance I think to be tagged with one of the existing cities nearby since I'm assuming they all have healthy loads.
DeleteMy guess, if this eventually happen, and although as many are saying the minister told many lies, I think since he is mentioning Qatar directly and publicly, that they do have some communication and something might happen soon.
It might work with SJJ, TIA, SKG, I don't think LJU will be possible to combine this flight, but lets wait and see.
I'll only believe it when I see it.
ReplyDeleteWould be great to have both FlyDubai and QatarAirways back.
Bravo!
ReplyDeleteLJU seems the most obvious choice but what about SPU given these flights are mainly for the Australian market and the Croatian diaspora is large.
ReplyDeleteSPU could only work seasonally. Actually in 2020 QR was about to launch DBV but cancelled it because of covidm
DeleteDOH-SKP-PRN incoming
ReplyDeletePossibly it could be nonstop flight , nothing is official , lets wait and see , the negotiation are still in process .. I am happy too see them back even with stop over and after they can schedule nonstop😊
ReplyDeletewe never had luck with our ministers for transport but this guy is a disgrace
ReplyDeletehe should apply for a job for Santa Clause, nothiing of what he said turned out true
All the things Santa Claus says turn true, what are you talking about ??
Delete:D:D
Deleteomg im NOt buying it AT ALL! he said so many stupid things during that Sitel interview that I am ashamed to write about it :D:D
ReplyDeleteIf is a new destination can be via/to Tirana. Makes sense!
ReplyDeleteWouldn't TIA-SKP be too close?
DeleteI call BS :)
ReplyDeleteI don't think he could just say something like these without there being some talks at least.
DeleteI am sure they talked, but he announced the route....I would believe it if QR announced it, not a politician.
Deletehate to say it but this guy should be threated with a great dose of suspicion
ReplyDeleteNice! Hope it materialises
ReplyDeleteNow we need Etihad to announce Abu Dhabi-Skopje 😀
