Wizz Air’s busiest Skopje routes in 2020

PREMIUM

Wizz Air has been Skopje Airport’s dominant customer, generating around 60% of its traffic on an annual level. In 2019, when the situation in the aviation industry was not influenced by the current coronavirus pandemic, Wizz Air maintained 31 routes out of Skopje, with up to five aircraft stationed in the city at the time. It launched four new routes from the Macedonian capital during 2019 and upgraded two of its services from seasonal to year-round operations. The global health emergency has had a big impact on the low cost airline’s operations out of Skopje. The entry ban for the majority of Macedonian nationals into the European Union and ongoing travel restrictions have resulted in Wizz suspending a number of its routes out of Skopje and heavily reducing frequencies on others.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, Basel persevered as Wizz Air's busiest route out of Skopje. It has been the airline’s star performer for years. The carrier faces no direct competition on the route and benefits from a large number of passengers who are heading to or originating from Kosovo that use the service. It handled a total of 49.900 travellers.
